- Victor Jara was born in Chile in 1932. His parents were farmers and he was encouraged to work from a young age instead of attend school.
- However, Victor's father became a violent drunk and left the family when Victor was young.
- After Victor's father left, his mother raised him and his siblings, placing an emphasis on education. After she died, he spent several years in the military.
- After returning home from the military, Victor enrolled in the University of Chile. There he joined the choir and earned a talent scholarship. By the 1960s, he began specializing in folk music.
- "Only an organized and conscious people can bring about a different kind of society."
- In 1966, Victor released his first his first album (self titled).
- Victor's songs were controversial among conservative Chileans. Throughout the 70s, he increasingly identified with Salvador Allende and the Socialist movement.
- Salvador Allende was the first Socialist leader to get elected democratically. Some of his policies included free milk for all children, and freezing prices while increasing wages.
- In 1970 Victor composed the song 'Venceremos', which became his most controversial song, as well as the battle cry for Allende's movement.
- "Sometimes democracy must be bathed in blood."
- In 1973, Augusto Pinochet was appointed to Commander in Chief of the Chilean Army by Salvador Allende.
- Pinochet attended the School of the Americas, a school with the goal of improving Latin American military relationships and training their students in warfare.
- Pinochet was known for tutoring and murdering anyone linked to the Socialist party (and even those not linked), and his views on art reflected this. He killed at least 3,000 people and tortured at least 30,000.
- President Richard Nixon had ordered an economic war against Chile, in fear of the Domino Effect, a theory that when one country became communist, others would follow. Nixon used the CIA to destabilize the Chilean government.
- In 1973, Pinochet staged a coup on the Presidential palace and established a military junta. Allende committed suicide in his office before he was reached.
- Inside the stadium, the guards tortured him by breaking his fingers and then asking him to play guitar. At one point, he sang Venceremos.
- During Pinochet's dictatorship, the Chicago Boys, a group of Chilean economists who studied at the University of Chicago, became prominent figures in the Chilean government. They are credited with improving Chile's economy, but also increasing unemployment rates.
- After Pinochet's coup, his soldiers gathered Chilean's involved in leftist parties, including Victor Jara. They were all imprisoned in Chile Stadium, now named Victor Jara Stadium.
- "How hard it is to sing when I must sing of horror/ Horror which I am living, horror which I am dying."
- It is most likely that Pedro Barrientos, a Chilean soldier, shot Victor Jara in the head after the torture occured. In 2018, Chile ordered the extradition of Pedro Barrientos. He was convicted with the murder of Victor Jara.
- In 1998, Augusto Pinochet was arrested in England for human rights violations. He died before he was convicted.
