- She went to college at Princeton University on a scholarship. Sotomayor graduated from Princeton in 1976 with a history degree. Sotomayor attended law school at Yale University.
- Sotomayor joined the United States Court of Appeals as a judge in 1998. In 2009, President Obama nominated her for a place on the SCOTUS bench. On August 31, 2009, the US Senate voted 68–31 in favor of her nomination.

- Sotomayor was born in the Bronx borough of New York City on June 25, 1954. Her parents were both born and raised in Puerto Rico. Sotomayor’s father was a manual laborer and her mother was a nurse. Spanish was Sotomayor’s first language and the language spoken at home by her family.When Sotomayor was nine years old, her father died. Her mother began working extended hours to support the family. She was able to earn enough money to send her children to Catholic private schools.
- Sotomayor married her high school sweetheart in 1976. The couple divorced seven years later. Sonia does not have any kids
