In 1975, the 14th of September, Whina Cooper gathered 50 supporters to walk with her to parliament in Wellington, starting from Te Hāpua. Te Hāpua is a community on the shores of the Parengarenga Harbour in Northland, New Zealand.
Between mid September and mid October, the protest walkers approached large cities and towns, the amount of people marching expanded to thousands after local town people joined them for a time to give moral support. The marchers, together with their support vehicles, stopped overnight at twenty-five Mareas en route all the way down the centre of the North Island.
On the 23rd of September 1975 the amount of people of marchers swelled by thousands as they proceeded towards Auckland city. The man leading the march over the Auckland harbour bridge was Joseph Parata Hawke of the Ngati Whatua o Orakei. Thousands of protesters crossed the bridge causing the bridge to sway a bit. This was actually the first time anyone had ever crossed the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
