The Aztecs were experiencing many frightening omens for about 10 years before Cortes arrived. One of the omens they experienced was the temple of Huitzilopopchtil mysteriously bursting into flames.
Moctezuma and his people believed that the omens were a sign that the god Quetzalcoatl was going to return to reclaim his throne. The Aztec calendar predicted his return the same year Cortes arrived.
The Aztecs believed that they were the centre of the universe and they weren't aware of any other civilizations. When Cortes and the Spanish arrived, Moctezuma believed Cortes was Quetzalcoatl.
Moctezuma sent emissaries with lavish gifts of jewels and featherworks to Cortes in hopes that he would leave. Aztec tradition believed the person receiving gifts should either submit or depart.
Moctezuma offered Cortes the clothing of Quetzalcoatl and Cortes put on the sacred feathered robes not realizing the importance of them. It confirmed the Aztecs belief that he was the god Quetzalcoatl.
