Storyboard Text

  • What they see isn't real. All prophecies are false. Laius had a prophecy that his son would kill him. He instantly summoned the infant for execution. However, he was slain by bandits at a cross-road. Only one of his servants made it out alive.
  • Why would you and Creon rage at each other?
  • Tiresias, a blind prophet sent by Creon, has accused me of executing King Laius, which I did not commit.
  • Long ago, I was the prince of Corinth. I overheard someone mention at a banquet that I was not really the son of the king and queen. I went to Delphi's oracle, who did not respond to my questions but did predict that I would murder my father and sleep with my mother. When I learned of this, I ran away from home, never to return because of the prophecy that was sent upon me. However , a bunch of travelers harassed me, and I killed them in self-defense.
  • What happened with Tiresias and Creon was told to Oedipus' wife, Jocasta. Jocasta reassured him that prophecies are not real with King Laius as an example.
  • Jocasta’s description of Laius’s murder, however, sounds familiar to Oedipus, and he asks further questions. Oedipus began to doubt the truth, questioning whether it was truly the truth. Oedipus, stunned, tells his wife that he may be the one who murdered Laius. He demands that the sole survivor be taken to him.
  • A messenger arrives from Corinth to inform Oedipus that his father, Polybus, is dead and that Corinth has asked Oedipus to come and rule there. Jocasta rejoices, convinced that Polybus’s death from natural causes has disproved the prophecy that Oedipus would murder his father. Oedipus curiosity grew and Jocasta, beginning to suspect the truth, begs her husband not to seek more information.
