- Soldiers missed food from home, and the food they did have was little or extremely hard to bite into. Northerners ate the food of Southerners after beating them just because they were better in terms of food.
- Bands would usually play to uplift the spirits of the soldiers, everyone was homesick, and there were constant drills just because nobody knew what to do but train and exercise.
- Soldier always feared they would die in the next battle, the battles fought were short, bloody and seldom. They also fought in bad conditions and there was lots of confusion where soldiers were placed and what they were doing.
- Some soldiers were fully awake during surgery and some eventually couldn't submit to the pain and killed themselves. Disease took more lives than wounds, but Diarrhea was the main cause of death.
- Bad conditions, people burrowed themselves from the sun, the small was bad and cells were unkept. Corpses laid everywhere, and the cell was described as overcrowded, vermin infested and drafty.
- Black soldiers usually didn't join the military, but when they did, they were usually put into troops under a white officer and never promoted. They weren't trusted to carry weapons and were not paid.
