Storyboard Text

  • The Hannibal, 1694.
  • Slaves were taken from the west coast of Africa and migrated to their future owners. They did do aboard ships
  • The conditions were horrible, chained to each other on small shelves 23 hours a day. They were fed beans and a liter of water per day.
  • Many of them died from diseases and others commited suicide. Some were killed by the crew members.
  • Most of the slaves were bought by rich merchands who made them work in plantations.
  • Most slaves were separated from their family. They had bad shelters and ripped clothes.
  • "Before the trade was stopped in the 19th century, some 15 million Africans had been seized for slavery in the Western hemisphere. Of those, perhaps 11 or 12 million were actually landed alive." (extract of Europe - A history, by Norman Davies)
  • Slaved were branded with the letter "H", to show that they belonged to this ship. When a slave tried jumping over board, if he failed, the crew members would severly hurt him, sometimes causing him to die anyway. Out of all of the Hannibal's crew, 18 out of 70 died.
  • Once arrived, the slaves were usually in very harsh conditions. Although some slave owners were kind, others didn't hesitate to cut of slaves' arms or legs if the did something wrong...Slavery was abolished in 1833.
