- Hey there, I’m Red the reader and welcome to Figurative Speech Town! There are so many people here to teach you new things about reading and writing. Today you’ll meet my friends Slim the Simile, Mindy the Metaphor, and Percy Personification. They’re going to tell you about themselves and their jobs here in town. I hope you guys have fun and learn something new and exciting! See you soon!
- Hi, I’m Slim and I’m a simile. A simile is a comparison of things using the words “like” or “as.”
- For example, you are as pretty as a flower and your hair shines like the sun. See, those are similes just like me!
- Oh, look, there's my friend Mindy.

- Hey, Mindy!
- Hi, Slim. Hi, guys, my name is Mindy and I’m a metaphor. Like Slim, I compare things, but I use more direct words such as, “is” and “was.”
- For example, my baby brother is a monster when he eats, but my mom said I was an angel at his age.
- Hey, Percy!
- Hey everyone, look! Here comes Percy!
- Hey Mindy and Slim! Hey everyone, I’m Percy Personification.Personification is a literary technique writers use to add human qualities to non-human things.
- For example, the stars are dancing in the night sky as the wind howls at the moon.
- Now that we've gotten to know each other, let's go meet Red on the boardwalk.
