- Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas to mother and father Marcella Samora and Abraham Quintanilla
- While Selena and her siblings, Suzie and Abraham Jr, were young, they had their own band called "Selena Y Los Dinos" which was managed by the childrens father who was a former musician. Selena did lead vocals while Suzie played drums and Abraham did guitar.
- As the children got better, they performed at bigger venues including their parent's restuarant. Abraham quickly noticed that this is what Selena was meant to do: entertain
- As Selena grew more popular, her father had her learn Spanish, since her first language is English, so that she could better relate to the Latino community and be seen as a Tejano artist. She could sing songs written in Spanish, but couldn't speak a conversation in Spanish.

- In 1990, Selena released her first album called Ven Conmigo . It became the first Tejano record to achieve gold record status (selling over 500,000 copies). It was an even bigger accomplishment because she was a 19-year-old who's first language was English
- After the release of her first album, Selena began secretly dating the drummer of her band, Chris Perez. They kept their relationship a secret before getting married in April of 1992
- In 1993, Selena goes on to become the first ever female Tejano artist to win a Grammy for Best Mexican-American album for her album Live! showing young girls everywhere that it is possible to achieve this type of accomplishment in a male-dominated music category
- Selena was always known for her beautiful outfits and even earned her the nickname "Mexican Madonna". So it was no surprise when she opened up her boutique Selena Etc. in 1994. She had so much support from her fans and the president of her fan club, Yolonda Saldivar who stuck by her side and remained very loyal to Selena
- In 1994, Selena held a fashion show to show her fans all the designs she and her team created and it was a huge success. Her fan base continued to grow and so did the attention she recieved from Hispanic countries and America
- As Selena's success was only growing, her and her husband had discussions of starting a family. Selena knew she wouldn't be able to write music forever and wanted to make plans for after her music career
- As her manager, Selena's father started noticing missing money in the accounts. Abraham knew the only person this could have been was the president of Selena's fan club; Yolanda Saldivar. He looked into Yolanda's past and saw she had a history of stealing money from those she worked for. This was hard for Selena since she saw Yolanda as a friend. Abraham wanted to confront Yolanda, but it was decided that Selena would instead.
- On the night of March 31, 1995, Selena and Yolanda met at a hotel to discuss what was going on with the money. Yolanda knew there was no way out. The fan club president shot Selena. She was only 23 when she died.
- Selena's death came as a shock to her millions of fans and to the Latino community as a whole
- Dreaming of You was released after Selena’s death and became a huge hit. The album hit number one on the Billboard Top 200 the week of August 5, 1995. That made it the first predominantly Spanish-language album to top the chart
- Selena Quintanilla was a role model to young girls everywhere, especially Latina girls, showing them that women should never be afraid of gender restrictions, especially in areas where men tend to dominate
- Not too long after Selena's death, the Selena movie was released in 1997. The movie was a huge hit. Her family appreciated the attention of detail to Selena and her legacy. Selena was played by Jennifer Lopez, which helped boost her career into the actress she is today.
- Yolanda Saldivar was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Selena. She was 35 years old when she shot Selena, making her 61 years old today. It was said that she had no chance of parole, but it set to be released March 20, 2025.
