That flag is pretty cool, I might consider that idea in the future!
Articles of Confederation
Everyone is going to love these new laws!
We are all in agreement then, the articles shall be passed!
Ooh, new laws for a new nation! Wonder how this turns out?
Shay's Rebellion
Stop throwing us farmers in jail and taking our land! Its your fault that we don't have the money to pay anything anyway!
Please, be rational! Just stop and nobody gets hurt!
Following the battle of Yorktown, the Americans had won the war for independence, causing them to create the final peace treaty with Britain that would end the war. Named the Treaty of Paris, the document stated that the new nation of America was able to be recognized as a new independent nation, have fishing rights along the coast of Canada, and have the British withdraw all troops from American territory. The Americans promised to pay British merchants the money they owed, and that Congress would return property taken from the Loyalists.
The Constitutional Convention
Second time's the charm!
I don't think that's how the saying goes George.
In November 1777, the Second Constitutional Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation. This new document gave most of the power to the states, to try and keep the power away from one person. This gave Congress limited power. Although they were able to conduct foreign affairs, maintain armed forces, and borrow and issue currency, they could not regulate trade, force citizens to join the army, and impose taxes.
Principles of the Constitution
The
Because of the fact that the Congress could not change the taxes without every states approval, the new country went into a depression. Farmers went into debt, and could not pay their taxes. This caused officials to throw them in jail and take their land. This angered many farmers, and a group in Massachusetts lead by Daniel Shays lead 1200 farmers to the weapons storehouse to get weapons. The militia told them to stop, but they didn't. They then fired at the farmers, killing 4 of them, causing the rest to run away.
Three Branches of Government
I, the president of the united states...
People get hurt.
In September 1786, Alexander Hamilton called for a convention to discuss trade issues. He also wanted to discuss ways to improve the Articles to make the country strong again. The Convention began in May 1787, and was made up of many different people, most of which were educated. The Convention did not fix the Articles, but instead created a completely different constitution altogether. Even after they were questioned by the citizens, they kept working .James Wilson worked on the details of the constitution, and Morris polished the final draft. James Madison kept a record of the Convention.
Aaaand, we're back to square one.
There were 3 branches of government that the Constitution decided to create for the country. They are called the judicial, legislative, and executive branches. The executive branch is made up of the president, vice president, and the cabinet. They are the group that carries out the nation's laws and policies. The legislative branch is made up of Congress, which is split into the House of Representatives and the Senate. This group establishes taxes, coin money, and regulate trade. The judicial group is made up of the Supreme Court. They hear cases involving the Constitution, federal laws, and disputes between states.
This way of government is still in use in the US, even today!
