Storyboard Text

  • JANIE MAE CRAWFORD
  • Quote:
  • Janie Crawford, the main character in Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God introduced herself to the girls in my high school Women in Literature class three years ago as we began with chapter one, and each year students have heard about her before the reading begins.
  • LOGAN KILLICKS
  • A hard-working farmer with 60 acres of land and a comfortable house, Logan does not have a major part in Janie's story, and yet he is a significant person in the culture of the South. He owns his own land, and he farms it successfully.
  • JOE (JODY) STARKS
  • Physically, Joe is not especially overpowering. He is probably a man of average size and dark complexion, one who puts weight on as he nears middle age. He characteristically smokes a cigar.
  • TEA CAKE
  • Tea Cake is Janie's last husband, who treats her as more of an equal than Killicks and Starks did, by talking to her and playing checkers with her. Despite this, Tea Cake does hit Janie to show his possession over her. Thus, Janie's life seems defined by her relation to domineering males.
  • PHOEBY WILSON
  • The bright, pretty, mature beyond her years, sane, and his most trusted link to family. She has red hair and is "roller-skate skinny," a metaphor that, Salinger seems to be saying, is like jazz; you either understand it when you hear it, or you never will.
  • MRS. TURNER
  • Mr. Turner is described as a "vanishing-looking kind of man" whose features were "dwindled and blurred." Tea Cake learns that Mr. Turner doesn't approve of his wife's behavior, either, but can't do anything about it.
