  • Running Too Hard
  • Y'all wanna team up?
  • Yeah, let's do it. We're going to win it all.
  • Here We Go
  • We have to win this!
  • Lost a Step
  • How did I let my guard down?
  • This all happened at the end of fifth grade. There were several competitions announced for an athletic day like sit-ups, push-ups, planks, and various runs. One of these runs was the 4x400 and there was some pride in it too as the final would be one team representing each of the four fifth-grade classes. So, I partnered with three of my friends in my homeroom and we were determined to win it.
  • Reflections from a Cloud
  • LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL!
  • We had a good squad and thought it would be exciting to compete. However, numerous teams signed up in each class so we first needed to win a qualifier to represent our class in the finals. We readied ourselves at the qualifiers with stretches as we built each other up. I was to run third and started getting nervous.
  • Different Pace
  • I outran him this time!
  •
  • As our race began, an excellent start was made but our opponents were not too far behind. The second run left an even shorter margin for error and my time began. My nerves got the best of me, but the people I was running against were fantastic too, some of them even my friends. Three-quarters into my lap, I gave up the lead and the anchor, the fastest of our team, could not do enough to win it back.
  • Resolve
  • That was really fun, you're a great runner
  • We still had the best time in our class and qualified for the finals, but I felt so disappointed in myself. My failure hung over my head like a dark cloud. The day of the finals came, the day before elementary school ended. There was not much of a gameplan to discuss, we kept the same order and just hoped we ran better or our opponents were worse. I believe we had more heart and drive, however. As if we had something to prove.
  • I cost my team that race
  • My attitude changed before the finals. I accepted it for what it was, a race. I was going to go out there and give it my best and have fun doing it. We did not want to lose again...and we didn't.
  • I overreacted greatly to my performance at the qualifiers. Sure, we did not have the best time, but I blew things out of proportion negatively affecting myself and my friends. I focused more on my failure instead of its cause and the fun of competing, my main purpose for entering.
