  • So you're from Antigua. What is its history? Can you tell me?
  • OK
  • In 2900 BC the Archaic people formed the first settlement
  • After the Archaic people, came the Saladoid People
  • Who are you?
  • I am from the Saladoid tribe. We are from Venezuela.
  • In 1200 AD Arawakan speakers came to Antigua
  • We came from Venezuela
  • They came from Venezuela to the island by canoe
  • I'm planting food.
  • What are you doing?
  • They were the ones who introduced agriculture to Antigua
  • they left because of the lack of fresh water on antigua
  • Most of the Arawakan speakers left in 1100 AD.
  • Goodbye!
  • Hello new friends!
  • In 1500 AD the island Caribs migrated to Antigua from Venezuela.
  • The remaining Arawakan speakers either got captured or killed by the Caribs
  • I heard that the British colonized Antigua. When did that happened?
  • There were two attempts to establish a colony....
  • The first was in 1493, but it failed.
  • Land!........ Uh oh!
  • The secound attempt was in 1632. The British succeeded and named Thomas Warner as their governor.
  • I will be the governor.

  • In 1632, Sir Christopher Codrington established the first large sugar estate.
  • Since sugar cane was the main cash crop, slaves were common from 1700 to 1834
  • You all are free now
  • The slaves were  freed in 1834, but they were still treated poorly.
  • The slaves and their descendants were treated poorly until 1939 when a trade union movement was formed.
  • What was the social pyramid in Antigua?
  • Well, back then there were six levels of social class...
  • Fourth, the Middle Easterners
  • First, the British...
  • Fifth, the Irish
  • Next the mulattoes...
  • And finally us, the African-Antiguans.
