Willoughby suddenly announces he must leave for business in London. Marianne is devasted and heartbroken by the news.
Meanwhile relations of Mrs Jennings, Anne & Lucy Steele arrive at Barton Park. Lucy tells Elinor that she has been secretly engaged to Edward Ferrars for a whole year. Elinor has to hide her pain and shock.
Mrs Jennings invites Elinor and Marianne to stay with her in London. Marianne is anxious to be reunited with Willoughby and everyone in London is talking of an engagement between them, even though Marianne has not confirmed this.
When Marianne sees Willoughby at a party he cruelly ignores her and then sends her a letter denying he ever had feelings for her.
Colonel Brandon tells Elinor about Willoughby's previous life. She is shocked to find out that he has lost his fortune and been disinherited due to his poor behaviour and as a result he has been forced to get engaged to a wealthy heiress.
Meanwhile, Edward Ferrars's mother finds out the truth about Edward & Lucy Steele's secret engagement. She is furious and disinherits Edward, promising his fortune to his younger brother, Robert, instead.
