In the beginning, Lara Jean is a quiet, nice, school girl who is in love with reading. She loves to read about romances, but she doesn't have any romances in real life, except for her love letters. Every time she has a huge crush on someone she writes them a letter, and when she seals them she is letting go of her crush. Instead of sending them, she puts all of them into her hat box.

Lara Jeans love letters get sent out to 5 different guys from her sister Katherine. One of them is Peter Kavinsky, the most popular boy in school. Peter just recently broke up with Gen, and is wanting to get back together. When Peter realizes Lara Jean used to have a huge crush on him, he makes a plan. Peter and Lara Jean are going to fake date, to convince Gen to get back with Peter. Lara Jean has to go from a nobody to one of the most popular person in school.

In the middle of everything Peter begins to fall in love with Lara Jean and liking Gen less and less everyday. Peter doesn't want to be in a fake relationship, he wants to be in a real one. And little does he know, so does Lara Jean. When he tells Lara Jean she doesn't want to at first, but then she realizes its the thing she wants most of life now. They decide to become real and are happier then ever.
