Hi! My name is Brady and I have dyslexia. My sister is a few years younger than me, so I am going to teach her all about dyslexia!
Dyslexia may be difficult for you to understand right now, so I want to try to break it down for you.
With dyslexia, I learn a little differently than you do. I might not be able to spell or read like you or most children and it might take me just a little bit longer. I sometimes have trouble getting my thoughts in order to tell a story, so please be patient with me (Johnston, 2019).
Dyslexia is something that I was born with. The parts of my brain that process reading and language are different from yours since I have dyslexia (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
5-17% of children have dyslexia, so there is probably someone in your class that has the same struggles as me (Johnston, 2019)
I found out I had dyslexia because by going to the doctor and doing a lot of tests. The doctor asked me and mom and dad a bunch of questions about how I am growing and learning and about how I am doing in school. I had to do things that tested how my brain works, as well as how I see and hear. (Mayo Clinic, 2022)
The doctor asked me questions about how I feel and how I play with my friends. I also took a bunch of tests for reading and school skills. After completing all of these tests, my doctor diagnosed me with dyslexia, and I started seeing a speech-language therapist (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
Although there is no cure for dyslexia, there are some ways that I can work to get better at reading, writing, and spelling with my speech-language therapist (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
With my speech-language therapist I get to play fun games that help me learn sounds and words. We read stories and I answer questions about each story to win prizes!(Witruk Wilcke, 2016)
My speech-language therapist helps me to learn new words and how to use them. She also helps me learn how to use all of my new information together, so I can do better on my school work and when talking to my friends and family (Witruk Wilcke, 2016).
You are welcome to join me if you would like!
At school, my teachers help me learn by having me listen, speak, read and write. This helps me to put all the information together when learning. We also play memory and writing games to help me learn! (Johnston, 2019).
When I am home working on my homework, you might think it looks easy to you, but please remember that I am trying my hardest and it might hurt my feelings if you tell me that it is easy. Sometimes with dyslexia I might feel bad about myself if I am struggling. (Gibby-Leversuch et al,. 2019).
I hope this helps you to learn a little more about me and dyslexia. If you have any questions just ask me or mom and dad. We want you to understand as best as you can!
