We begin with the birth of Genji and are informed that his mother, Kiritsubo, has a low status at court and is mistreated by the emperor's other wives. Kiritsubo dies when Genji is only three.
The emperor then finds a woman, Fujitsubo, who closely resembles Kiritsubo, and invites her to court to be his first consort. He married Fujitsubo, who resembles his late wife.
As a young man, Genji falls in love with Fujitsubo, despite being married to Aoi, who has chosen for him and with whom he does not feel compatible. Then eventually bears him a son. They manage to hide the secret of the child’s paternity from the Emperor

After this, Fujitsubo gives birth to her child named Reizei. Fujitsubo feels guilty and makes the decision to remove herself by court life, and from Genji's advances by becoming a nun.
Genji also has affairs with other women.
One with a child name Murasaki, who reminds him of Lady Fujitsubo. Genji makes Murasaki his second wife.
The other one is Lady Kokiden’s sister is discovered about the same time that Genji’s father retires as Emperor and then dies.
Genji is exiled in Suma, He has an affair with a priest’s daughter, Lady Akashi, who is virtually forced into Genji’s arms by her father; the affair produces a daughter. After another change in emperor, Genji is called back to court and takes both Lady Akashi and his daughter with him. Genji’s son by Lady Fujitsubo becomes Emperor; Genji also arranges for the daughter of one of his former lovers, Lady Rokujo, to become the new Emperor’s first wife.
