- SettingThe setting is a village with brush homes next to the ocean. pg.3 ¨Across the brush fence were other brush houses¨ This setting supports the theme because it shows the main characters are villagers living in huts and are poor. Since they are poor when they find something that is valuable they could become greedy about it because they don´t have anything.
- CharacterWhen someone tries to steal the pearl from Kino´s home one night and Kino gets hurt. pg. 38 ¨This thing is evil, This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us.¨ The greed of having the pearl causes evil things to happen to Kino and his family.
- CharacterThe pearl buyers lie to Kino about how much they think the pearl is worth. pg. 49, ¨you have heard of fools gold, the dealer said,. This pearl is like fool´s gold. It is too large.¨ The pearl buyers say this because they want to pay a small price for the pearl so they can make more money on it. Their greed supports the theme.
- ConflictEveryone is after the pearl. Kino gets jumped outside of his house one night and gets cut on his face. pg. 56, ¨Kino this pearl is evil. Let us destroy is before it destroys us.¨ It supports the theme because everyone has become so greedy for the pearl, they are willing to fight to steal it away from Kino.
