- "'They think that we are like doormats-or ants or something!'"
- "'Why wouldn't they want to know me'"
- Lynn is smart and truthful. Before Katie goes to school for the first time her sister Lynn tells her that the people at school think of Japanese people differently. She goes on to tell Katie that the people at school treat them like doormats which are insignificant and not noticed. Lynn is also smart Katie is always saying that Lynn is a genius.
- Katie is innocent. Katie is innocent because when Lynn said that some people might not want to be friends with her she didn't understand. She didn't understand why people wouldn't want to be her friend. This is why she is so innocent.
- '"Someday you won't even remember Bera-Bera"'
- Uncle is not polite and mean. A after Lynn beat him he made her play him 3 more times to prove that he could win. In the end Lynn let him win and he bragged about it. This is why uncle is not polite.
- Father is protective. He gets shaving cream for him birthday and always is thankful and doesn't think about him self. I think this because Katie always says that he only cares about his wife and kids and doesn't care about him self.
- Mother is delicate and direct. '"Someday you won't even remember Bera-Bera"' says the mother. The mother is also delicate where their was a whole year where she didn't get out of bed. She is also direct in the fact that she doesn't water it down for her five year old daughter.
