When TJ tells his family that he has decided to join the U.S. troops in the Vietnam War effort, his mother is against the idea. But his sister, Jamie, supports him on the decision to go to war. Jamie and TJ both expected their father, the Colonel, to love the idea since he raised them in the army way, but are surprised to see him with a depressed and scared expression on his face.
Good for you TJ!!
You could've gone to college!
....
I decided to go to the Vietnam war
While TJ is at war in Vietnam, Jamie has volunteered to help out the soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, where she met her best friend, a soldier named Bucky Hollister. While she cleaned up the waiting room she was assigned to be at, she and Bucky would play cards. She tells him that she can't wait to get a letter from TJ when he writes back. But Jamie later finds out that Bucky's older brother, Barney, died in the war earlier.
Hello Private Hollister!
Sure!
Hey Jamie!Wanna play a game of gin rummy?
But when Jamie and her dad got home, she found private Bucky Hollister in her living room. It turns out the Colonel signed everyone else's papers to go to war but he didn't on Bucky's papers in Fort Hood. Buchy knows about Jamie's missing brother, so he asks her to play a game of cards, to take her mind off of something painful and difficult and put it in a calmer state of mind.
I don't think I like war anymore....
When a package from TJ has arrived to Jamie's house to her family, the only thing she got out of the package was a role of film with photos in it. So the day after that, she went to the film room that is in Fort Hood and developed the film on the film machine and she played the pictures on the projection, and she was horrified at seeing what the photos showed. The photos showed dead soldiers and wounded soldiers, and it included photos of the moon because TJ liked the moon. Over the days she would get more rolls of film and she will play it on the projector, but every photo and roll of film made her change her view on the war, and soon she hated war and wanted her brother back home. Also, every more roll of film soon includes more photos of the moon to the point where the only pictures in the rolls of film are the moon.
when school began for Jamie, she stopped visiting Bucky and Fort Hood for a week, when one day she decided to go back and visit him. But when she got there, she found out by another soldier that Bucky Hollister was moved to a compound in Vietnam since the U.S. troops there need more soldiers for the war effort. Jamie races to her dad's place with hope that he could tell her where Private Hollister is at because he's the one who signs the soldier's papers for whether or not they go to war at Fort Hood.
Where's my best friend Bucky Hollister !!
No!! It can't be true!!
He was transported to Vietnam.
But when Jamie goes to her father's workplace, he breaks the news to her that her brother, TJ, is missing in action in Vietnam and no one knows where he's at, and that they need to go home. Jamie can't take all of this and starts crying with sadness.
Your brother TJ is missing in action.
First Buchy Hollister, and know my very own brother, TJ.
Thank you Hollister and dad.
And Jamie agrees to it happily, and soon Jamie's mother joins the game, and later does the Colonel with glasses of lemonade, and little did they know that TJ was really in a concentration camp, and he will be there for the next 2 years, but in the end of the war, he will return to the family well and alive.
Thank you Colonel for not signing my papers, and thank you Jaime.
