Odysseus has to leave home to go to fight in the Trojan war. He leaves his family behind and hopes that he will soon return.
After leaving the island of Troy, Odysseus and his men land on the island of the Cicones. They have come to raid this land in hope of food. Instead they find themselves battling the native people.
Odysseus and his men land on the island of the Lotus Eaters. Some of Odysseus' men eat the intoxicating fruit of the lotus.
Odysseus and his men landed on the island of the cyclops Polyphemus. They found a cave filled with food when suddenly the giant Polyphemus returned and ate two of Odysseus men and locked them in his cave. They waited until the morning and then they stabbed him in the eye and blinded him. Odysseus told Polyphemus that his name was "nobody".
Odysseus had now come upon the island of Aeolus the god of wind. Aeolus treated Odysseus with kindness. Odysseus told his story to Aeolus, his six sons and six daughters and they loved it. In return Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of wind.
Odysseus and his men run out of wind and then row to the island of the Laestrygonians. When they come on land they relized that giants live there. The giants threw bolders at Odysseus' ships and sunk them. However, Odysseus' ship was able to escape.
They then go to the land of Aeaea, home of the witch god Circe. She drugs many of Odysseus' men and turns them into pigs. As Odysseus is about to go save his men, Hermes approches him and gives him a flower called Moly to protect him from her drug. Odysseus then tells her to set his men free and she falls in love. Odysseus and his men live there for a year and then they leave.
Odysseus then does the ritual to get into the underworld where he meets many people. When he meets Theban prophet Tiresias he tells him all about Odysseus' future and tells him not to kill the Sun god's cattle or he will return home a broken man. Odysseus also speaks with his mother. She tells him about what was happening in Ithaca. Then he meets many famouse people.
Odysseus reaches the island of the Sirens. They had a human head and a vulture body. Odysseus is told to plug his mens ears with beezswax and then bind him to the mast of the ship. When they passed the seductive singing of the Sirens, Odysseus begs to be let go, but his men only tied him up tighter. They then passed the Sirens without loosing any men.
Odysseus and his men now must pass the six headed monster Scylla and a whirlpool Charybdis. When they try to pass, Scylla swallows up six of his men. They then make it threw.
Odysseus then lands on the island of the Sun god. He is told many times to not kill the cattle or he will come home as a broken man. Odysseus falls asleep and his men go out and kill all the Sun god's cattle. As a result, Odysseus is cursed and looses all his men.
Odysseus comes upon Calypso's island and she claims him as her husband. When Odysseus does not want to be her husband any more because he misses his real wife Penelope, Athena asks her father Zeus if he can set him free. Fortunately, he sends down his messager to tell Calypso to let Odysseus go.
THE END
Disguised Athena meets Odysseus after he talks with the princess he found when he woke up on the island of the Phaeacian's. Athena tells him a little about the queen and king before he goes and meets them. She also puts a mist around him to that will protect him.
Odysseus tells his son Telemachus that he is his father and that he is just disguised as a begger temporarily until they find out how they are going to get rid of the suitors.
Finally, Odysseus is able to reveal himself to the suitors and kills them all with his bow and arrow.
