Storyboard Text

  • Meneer, I had this wonderful module during my first year at UJ.
  • Tell me about it
  • (Argh, here we go again. This is the seventh of my former English Learners to talk about this LES thing.)
  • I now know how to write a real essay, incorporating credible information from other sources. And I now know how to debate with facts rather than sweeping statements.
  • Interesting, child. Tell me more
  • Is this kid implying that I didn't teach her and her classmates to write a real essay? All my hard work was in vain.
  • I learnt everything effectively because there was a practical assessment (alongside quizzes) at the end of each chapter, e.g. I took part in an actual debate in class, and I always scored relatively high marks, so I believe I have understood the content. But I believe I could have taken LES more seriously and allocated more time to it in my study plan, I would probably achieve a year mark of 90% or higher but it's too late now. I'm satisfied with my marks regardless. My way of thinking has changed drastically because I fully understood the various components of academic writing, compared to in high school where you just had to waffle and reach a word count of 300 words in 60 minutes. I also had a vibrant and helpful tutor alongside the lecturer. I look forward to using these recently acquired skills in my upcoming academic work and eventually in the workplace.HOLD ON, he has left? Mr Van Der Merwe!?
