- How does the character look? Elwood Curtis is a black teenage boy who makes sure he is presentable. He is a clean, put together young man.
- What actions do they take? Elwood Curtis works at a local grocery store called "Marconi's Tobacco and Cigars". While on the job he tells his boss that two young men stole some candy. They later beat him up to teach him a lesson for snitching.
- What kind of person are they? Elwood is a bright student that has a passion for civil rights. His teacher,Mr. Hill, has even arranged for him to take college courses at a nearby community college. He takes pride in his education and daily life.

- Where are they going? To get to school everyday, Elwood hitchhikes. But, turns out guy that he caught a ride with this particular day stole the car they were riding in. They got caught and Elwood got booked.
- What do they do poorly? Elwood tried to help a boy name Corey who was getting bullied in the bathroom by two other boys. Even though what he did was good later that night all four boys were taken from their beds and were brutally beaten by the superintended and a white houseman.
- What does the character think about? Elwood always thinks about what it would feel like to be free again. He tries to remember the feeling of being able to go through life without being beaten to near death.
