Storyboard Text

  • Gina's story impacted me profoundly and reminded me of why I want to be an educator: to relentlessly believe in and help others, as Niki has done for her child. The lengths that she had gone through to care for Gina are truly inspiring. Niki was unwavering and constantly looked for ways to help Gina, even when others (including medical professionals) suggested she be placed at an institution. I was moved by how she turned all that was coming her way into love, dedication, and responsibility for Gina. Simultaneously, I have been inspired by Gina who is immensely resilient. She, like her mother, was unwavering and worked hard, affirming that all students have limitless potential. It is up to us to collaborate with parents, service providers, medical professionals, and other relevant individuals to draw out that potential and never give up on our students.
  • Gina’s story teaches people that everyone, no matter their needs, can turn the proper help and guidance they receive into the unimaginable. Importantly, it also raises existent issues in the medical and education system. The fact that teachers frequently reported what Gina was not doing, rather than all that she was accomplishing, is saddening. Furthermore, it seemed as if the doctors were trying to persuade Niki that there was no hope for Gina. In reality, however, Gina has gone on to accomplish so much, impacting the lives of countless others.
  • Ideas to Help Parents Share their Voice
  • After reading Gina’s story, I considered various strategies that I can implement as an educator to help parents like Niki share their voices.
  • 1. I will communicate with parents frequently with messaging systems like Class Dojo, Remind, or Email. Furthermore, I can make it clear that they can reach out to me at any time or set up an appointment.2. I will encourage parents to join the PTA and provide them with the necessary information, as well as resources, to do so. As a PTA member, parents will be able to voice themselves in meetings or connect with other parents with similar concerns. Together (myself included) we could advocate for students more effectively.
  • 3. I will provide parents with resources, including translated ones, regarding school district meetings, which are public and can allow parents to voice themselves. 4. I will be an advocate for the parents, conveying their concerns and messages to relevant school personnel. Provide contact information for individuals, services, and programs that could support them and their children.
  • 5. I will frequently ask parents for suggestions, requests, concerns, or thoughts that will help me support their child. I will make my dedication to helping their child be known and I will build, as well as maintain positive collaborative relationships with parents.
