Oh... well, nice to finally meet you in-person, Amrita?
…You never told us you were engaged to her?
Bob and Diane's Bedroom
How could you do this to us? We are a well-known family and you bring HER to our home? You could not find someone BETTER or at least someone with the same race??
You people are unbelievable! I love her for who she is, not for the color of her skin. If you do not accept her for who she is, don't bother coming to the wedding!
I cannot believe you, Michael!
After Dinner
Our own SON told us not to go to the wedding all because of YOU! It is all of your fault!!
...
Father!!
Thanks for the dinner!
Is something wrong?
Michael introduces his wealthy, yet arrogant parents, Bob and Diane, to his fiancée, Amrita. Amrita felt as if his parents were criticizing her as soon as she opened the front door, based on their perplexed expressions. The parents made it seem that Amrita was not meant to be there, and that the person who the parents were hoping did not live up to their expectations. This made Amrita uncomfortable. She did, however, try to make the best of the circumstance.
Outside Bob and Diane's House
Bob and Diane tell Michael to come into their room to "chat," while Amrita sits on the living room sofa. Bob and Diane are ranting at Michael regarding Amrita, believing she is unsuitable for their son. Michael had enough of the complaints and could not take it any longer. He shouted at both of them, telling them that if they did not respect or accept her, they should not attend the wedding. He stood his ground for his fiancée, but the parents were not too pleased with his decision.
Bob and Diane's Living Room
We are very sorry for judging you before getting to know you. We hope you can forgive us. We will definitely go to the wedding if you'd let us.
As all of them sat down and finished their tense dinner, it was time for Michael and Amrita to leave to their own house. Amrita complimented the meal and told Bob and Diane how wonderful it was. There was, however, no reaction. All of a sudden, everything went silent, and the only sound you could hear was Diane's heels tapping rapidly on the floor. Amrita asked if everything was alright, but it wasn’t. Bob started to complain to Amrita, saying that it was all your fault that we cannot go to the wedding, upsetting her.
Michael and Amrita's Wedding Day
CONGRATULATIONS
3 Months Later
Amrita hurried out of the dining room, crying, and then into the porch, where Michael followed her. She began explaining to Michael that she just wanted his parents to like her, since her own parents did not. She then explained that ever since she introduced Michael to her parents, they started behaving differently towards her. She was shunned from the family because they did not accept Michael for who he is and she was hoping that Michael’s parents were more sympathetic. They were, however, the same and as the parents overheard their conversation, they felt extremely terrible for her.
I just wanted them to like me. I knew that I wouldn't belong here because of my race. I just hoped they accepted me for who I am.
I feel bad, also. We should apologize, get to know her more, and support them in their decision.
I feel really bad! She seemed like a nice person and we just judged her.
Don't cry. Don't listen to what they said. I only uninvited them because of the way they spoke about you. I love you for you!
Michael's parents called Amrita back in to talk as she was wiping her tears. She stood up and walked into the house with Michael, somewhat reluctantly. Michael stood up next to his fiancée, while Amrita, Bob, and Diane all sat down. The parents apologized to Amrita for how they had mistreated her. They also explained that they had no idea that her parents were treating Michael the same way. The parents explained that if she had the ability to forgive them, they would be delighted to attend the wedding. She smiled and said that they all may attend the wedding.
I forgive you. You all can come to the wedding.
Fast forward to three months later, Amrita is getting married with Michael with his parents being supportive of them. Amrita is relieved and pleased that she finally has a great relationship with Michael’s parents through the course of the three months. She finally felt like a part of the family, which made both her and Michael very pleased. People cheered them on as they walked down the aisle, and Amrita realized the importance of belonging, whether in a group, community, or even a family.
I finally feel as if I belong here: with you, and your family
