- Molly and her brother went shopping. She and her brother had spent a total of $150.
- Total Spending?
- Molly and her brother each bought 1 item.
- (70 + 30) + n = 150100 + n = 150100 - n = 150 - 100n = 50
- Molly’s brothers item cost $70.Then on the way home, they got some lunch that cost $30 in total.
- I don't know! Because the Gods of Algebra said so okey? Oh, and also because then its easier for others to follow your work.

- OK, but why did you have to make it soo complicated?
- How much did the item that Molly bought cost?
- Molly spent a total of $50 on her item.
- Molly: First, we can see what we know, you spent a total of $70 on your thing and another $30 on our lunch. So when you add those two up you get 100. So now you can just subtract the total amount of money we had with the money that you spent on your item and the money that we used for lunch. Then we get a remainder of $50, which means i must have spent a total of $50 on my item.
