- "His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge: I have so often blushed to acknowledge him, that now I am brazed to it"(1.1.9-11).

- You have disrespected and betrayed me Cordelia! I shall disown you and split your share between your loving sisters

- Gloucester and Kent are talking about the king’s decision to split up the kingdom. Kent asks Gloucester about his son, Edmund, whom Gloucester explains that his son is a bastard. He also brings up his legitimate son, Edgar, who is a few years older than Edmund, however, Gloucester says he loves them both equally.
- She comes with no land, thus , she is worthless to me. I back out.
- Which one of you shall marry my daughter?
- She is perfect in my eyes, I shall marry her!
- Lear asks his youngest daughter, Cordelia, to speak. She says nothing, and says that she should not have to prove her love to him. She loves him just as any daughter would love her father. This angers Lear and he disowns Cordelia, and splits her share of the land with Regan and Goneril
- "if our father carry authority with such dispositions as he bears, this last surrender of his will but offend us"(1.1.304-306).
- I agree, we shall betray our father!
- King Lear arrives and announces that he will be giving up his throne and dividing the kingdom into three parts. He will give the territories to his daughters; Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. The king asks his daughters to prove their love for him, and whoever loves him the most will receive the most land.
- This is outrages! it seems as if Edgar is planning to kll me.
- Father, check this latter I found written by your son Edgar.
- The two princes, France and Burgundy are also attending, and are asked to marry Cordelia. Burgundy is unable to make a choice and therefore rejects her. Lear then asks France who says he will happily accept her, and that the king is making a grave mistake by disowning his only treasure, Cordelia.
- Goneril and Regan plot secretly together. Despite the fact that they now have entire control of the kingdom, they agree that they must take steps to limit their father's lingering power.
- Edmund is frustrated and tired of being treated differently because he is a bastard. He plans on framing Edgar by making it seem like he is planning the murder of their father, Gloucester. He does this by using a letter that makes it seem like Edgar is plotting to murder his father.
