In this scene Hale goes to the Proctor household to see if they are devoted Puritans. Hale starts asking them a myriad of questions about the religion. For example he asked them about their lack of attendance to church and how their third child isn't baptized. John explains that his reasoning for all of this is his strong dislike for Reverend Parris. John says he didn’t like what he was preaching about the candles until he got them. John also mentions how he doesn’t want Parris to touch his children. Hale also asked John to name the Ten Commandments, but ironically he could only name nine and forgot adultery. Elizabeth had to save him by naming the forgotten commandment.
