- the gardenEach spring the dark Nicholtown dirt is filledwith the promiseof what the earth can give back to youif you work the landplant the seedspull the weeds.My southern grandfather missed slaveryby one generation. His grandfatherhad been owned.His father worked the land from dawn till duskfor the promise of cottonand a little pay.So this is what he believes inyour hands in the cool dirtuntil the earth gives back to youall that you've asked of it.Sweet peas and collards,green peppers and cukes lettuce and melon,
- berries and peaches and one daywhen I'm able, my grandfather says,I'm gonna figure out how to grow myself a pecan tree.God gives you what you need, my grandmother says.Best not to ask for more than thatHmph, my grandfather says. And goes backto working the land, pulling from it all we needand more than that.
- This is what I believe in. Getting your hands in the cool dirt until the earth gives back to youall that you've asked of it.
- I picked this poem because this is very powerful. This is what means the most to her grandfather and she is following and helping him. Her grandfather doesn't have to work in the garden but he chooses to do so. His dad was forced to work and he isn't but he chooses to do so because that's what he believes in. He is doing this because it is what his father did and that's why he believes what he does. He could be doing so many other things but this is what he chooses to do. because he believes.
