  • All right soldiers. Let's go defeat them!
  • Although this event is called the American Revolution, it also had a major impact on parts of what is now Canada. One of these places is Québec. In 1774, the Québec Act was created. This provided more freedoms for the people of Québec but some of them meant that there were more restriction on Americans. For example, it gave Québécois the freedom of a Roman Catholic religion, brought back French civil law, and, as mentioned earlier, made them incharge of the Ohio Valley.
  • I think we should join the Americans and rebel for freedom from Britain!
  • This act angered many Americans. They didn't like Québec being in charge of the Ohio Valley and since many Americans were Protestants, they weren't very fond of a Roman Catholic religion. In 1775, a war broke out. American forces led by General Richard Montgomery started seizing forts, one of them being Québec's Fort Chambly. They then captured Fort Saint-Jean in November, leading Carleton (the governor of Québec at the time) to abandon Montreal and go instead to the town of Québec.

  • Meanwhile, General Benedict Arnold made it to Québec's fortress, along with 700 soldiers. Later in December he was accompanied by Montgomery and his soldiers. On December 31, during a snowstorm, the Americans attacked Québec but luckily for Québec, they were armed with 1 800 British soldiers who were led by Carleton. Although the Americans attacked from two different directions, Arnold was wounded and eventually his soldiers surrendered. Montgomery was pushed back after many of the leading people in his army were killed. After a few more smaller events, Québec had won the war.
  • At last!
  • Freedom from Britain!
  • Another province in Canada that was affected by the Revolution was Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia did not have a firm ground during the American Revolution. The Assembly voted to remain loyal to the Crown but that didn't stop citizens from holding illegal town meetings that were in support of the rebels. In 1776, there was an attack on Nova Scotia by the Americans and Nova Scotians who were in favour of independence. They attacked Fort Cumberland but it didn't work as the fort was able to stall until British troops made it there and ended the attack.
  • After many wars, the American Revolution officially ended when the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783. In the treaty, Britain recognized that America was an independent country and removed its troops from the land.
