- Hey Jerry! How you doing today?
- Not so good Ed. Our population is decreasing.
- Why?
- Deforestation, squirrel pox and, invasive species.
- I don't understand.
- Let me explain...
- There used to be a lot of trees here. But now that humans have cut them down, many red squirrels have nowhere to live. This is called deforestation.
- Where do we go, our home is destroyed.
- These squirrels were infected with a disease called squirrel pox. Squirrel pox is a disease that is carried by gray squirrels and is fatal to red squirrels.
- Oops. I guess I had squirrel pox.
- Move out! This is our home now!
- This is showing what invasive species is. Invasive species is when a species of animal that takes over another animals land, that they are native to.
- But your not native to this land!
- Is there anyway we can stop it?
- But that is so bad!
- I don't know Ed. We are just squirrels.
- AHHHHHH.
- But I am a human and have come to help!
- How are you going to help Mr. Human?
- That's a great idea!
- Well there are many ways, but one of the ways we can is create a buffer area and control the amount of grey squirrels.
- We can also keep a constant surveillance on red squirrels, help landowners improve the habitat, and last but not least, plant trees to correct areas of woodland.
- With all these ideas put to use, the red squirrels are sure to repopulate
- YAY!
