Storyboard Text

  • A young slave by the name of Frederick Douglass is rented from his master Captain Auld to Mr. Covey, a plantation owner. Mr. Covey is a cruel man who takes pleasure in breaking the spirits of enslaved beings, Covey glares at Douglass, his eyes watching Douglass like a hawk. “He will do fine,” Covey growls. “I must warn you of his defiance, he takes pleasure in reading” Captain Auld replies.Douglass glanced nervously at Mr. Covey, his heart beating rapidly in his chest. As he was brought to work, Douglass trudged slowly into the rustic smell of the plantation.
  • Crack! Crack! Covey’s whip struck Douglass in the head, all because Douglass was not good at the work. It wasn’t his fault, he was used to the city life of Baltimore, it’s streets crowded with people. Douglass winced as he remembered his old life and the salty smell of Baltimore, how he missed the beautiful port city, Crack! Another strike from Covey’s whip brought him back to reality. “Do the work right or you’ll get more lashes next time!” Covey shouted.Covey put away his brown cowskin whip and walked away, leaving Douglass on his knees, blood rushing in the side of his head and tears in his eyes. Everyone hated Covey, he was a cruel man who would even try to sneak up on slaves and discover them resting. This action earned him the nickname: “The Snake”. Douglass must work in the scorching heat with Mr. Covey’s wrath, all year long.
  • One hot summer day, Douglass is working in the fields when he is suddenly struck by a fever, Douglass suddenly falls to the ground. Covey walks over to Douglass and yells,“Get up!”“I can’t” Douglass moans.Douglass tries to get up and stumbles back down,Covey then gives him a savage kick in the side, picks up a board, and beats him with it for an hour. After the incident, Douglass escapes the plantation, he returns to Captain Auld’s house seeking his old life back.“No” says Captain Auld, “You must return to Mr. Covey”.Douglass sighed and trudged slowly back to the plantation, through the dark forest.
