Tom introduced early on is the husband of Daisy, he is a college athlete fallen from grace. He is a physically and mentally hardend person. He embodies the "american dream" but often reflects the reality that it's not cut out to be as it seems. He is also a very racist person, constantly thinking in a one way decisivness making him very ignorant.
Myrtle seeks a better life then the one she is in. She somewhat reflects Daisys inner selfishness and desires for only material things. It's the exact reason Tom is delusionally drawn to her as well. Her death represents, so much, it represents that wealth, and irresponsibility only leads to death and destruction.
The Great Gatsby represents 2 sides of the same coin, the East and the West Egg. There's a divide in society, and everybody is out trying to do whats best for them and only for them. The chase of selfish desires and instant gratifications causes the demise of Gatsby, and Myrtle, it also causes unessecary pain to all assoicated. Fitzgerald wanted to embody life with Romantiscism, not to inspire people to chase a meer temproary feeling but to show us that they cloud judgment like alchohol and you must be level headed and not be englufed in daily affairs to survive and thrive in this world like our narrator "NICK".
