in this situation i shouldn't have tried to make it seem like a joke because this only encourages the mindset that making racist remarks seems funny or ok. I don't expect everyone to be aware that some of the stuff they say is racist because its so normalized but if it doesn't come out right or seem right to say or you get looks, its most likely offensive and not ok and if you see something like this happen say something for that person, because most of the time they don't know how to speak up for themselves
this can make the school a better and healthier environment because if you stick up for the students being talked to in that way it can give them the courage to realize they should let it seem ok and if the person saying thee things isn't aware it harmful maybe because of upbringing it can educate them so it doesn't happen again, although some people are a lost cause, that's their problem but at least your giving those people being talked down on confidence to speak up.
