  • On June 30, 1779, Sir Henry Clinton, British commander-in-chief of the Crown’s North American forces, issued the Philips-burg Proclamation which granted freedom to the enslaved in rebel states if they fought for the British.
  • All enslaved people who come and fight for in British army will be granted their freedom
  • How dare you promise my slaves freedom if they come and fight for your army
  • I am leaving to join the British army to gain my freedom
  • The British found support from thousands of enslaved individuals who ran to the British side to escape their bondage.
  • My slaves can not just run away and join the British. This will not stand!!!
  • My slaves do not belong in the army they are my property and will not be taken from me!!!
  • The Continental Congress had suggested that enslaved people be given freedom if they joined the Patriot army against the British, but revolutionaries in Georgia and South Carolina refused to consider this proposal.
