  • First we have to go back to 1850 - 1900 and see how JJ Thomson discovered the electron
  • JJ Thomson's Discovery of the Electron
  • Hello class. For today's lesson, we'll be discussing JJ Thomson, who was the person who discovered the electron
  • English Physicist Joseph John Thomson
  • JJ Thomson
  • JJ Thomson was born on December 18, 1856, in Cheetham Hill, near Manchester, England in United Kingdom
  • In 1870, JJ Thomson enrolled in Owens College in Manchester, and in 1876, he was admitted as a minor scholar to Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1884 to 1918, he was the Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge, succeeding Lord Rayleigh, and Honorary Professor of Physics at Cambridge and the Royal Institution in London.
  • JJ Thomson began a series of experiments using the cathode ray to determine the charge-to-mass ratio of a charged particle. He then compared that ratio to other known ratios. He was then able to conclude that the charged particle's mass was less than a hydrogen atom. He was then able to identify the first subatomic particle, the electron, which revolutionized the structure of the atom, and because of this, he was able to get the Nobel Prize in 1906 for his discovery.
  • Cathode Ray
  • JJ Thomson's discovery was able to disprove that atoms were divisible into smaller atomic particles, which Dalton's Theory proposed, which many scientists found hard to accept. This discovery was able to further help with the structure of the atom because without the electron; positive charges will be present in the atom. Atoms cannot make bonds with each other without electron atoms like NaCl which is a common salt.
  • JJ Thomson's atomic model
  • So class, how did the findings of JJ Thomson advance your understanding of atomic structure?
  • Thats it for todays lesson, I hope you learned something. See you again next time class bye bye
  • It helped me understand the importance of electrons and why it has to be in the atom because without the electron, it would have a positive charge, and it would not be able to make bonds with each other. Also, without the electrons, we would not be able to pass electricity through wires and circuits.
