i said shemoneh esrei then shema just like rebbe yehoshua ben levi says
i said shema and then shemoneh esrei like rebbe yochanan says
Slide: 2
the reason is: Rebbi Yochanan says at night we say shema before Shmonei Esrei because we were redeemed from Egypt in the morning, but the redemption really started at night. The Egyptians tried to chase us out at night, but we only left in the morning. Therefore we should recall both aspects of the redemption
Rebbi Yehoshua Ben Levi says we only recall the redemption in the morning because that was the main redemption. He agrees that the redemption began at night, but we should only recall the main redemption. The debate here is that the entire redemption (night and morning) The main redemtion (just the morning)
rebbi yochanan wins this argument and we say Shema and then Shmonei Esrei at night. We cannot make an interruption between the bracha of Ga’al Yisrael and Shmonei Esrei .If we make an interruption between the two, we are no longer connecting the two .The different reasons given for why it is important to connect the two: Rashi says that it enhances our tefillah since we think of Hashem as one who would answer our tefillot, so we can improve our tefillot by thinking about that when davening and Ritva says that it is important to listen to the Rabbis, and since the Rabbis told us to connect geulah to tefillah, we should it, and that is why it is important. Rabbeinu Yonah tells us that it is important to connect the two because Hashem is our Redeemer, and so we can improve our tefillah if we recognize that He has previously saved us and so therefore we can know that He will save us again
