  • The USS Maine ship sinked. The sinking of the USS Maine caused it to lead to war. Yellow Journalism. Cubans were fighting to gain their independence. The cause of the Spanish American War was Cuba's struggle to get their independence from Spain. When the USS Maine exploded, it was blamed on Spain because a ship got destroyed by a Spanish Mine. The USS Maine exploded because of gunpowder magazines. There were 266 people on the ship when it exploded and only 102 survived. A mine really exploded the USS not Spain. The USS exploded at 9:40 PM on February 15, 1898. A mine caused the ship to sink because the mine was underneath the ship and it exploded. After they blamed Spain for exploding the ship, It led to war.

  • the United States came out of the war as a world power. the United States gained control of Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. Cuba became a republic in 1902. They made the Independence of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the United States. Cuba struggled to get their independence from Spain. There was some human suffering. The United States won the war and the Treaty of Paris ended the war.
