After the Saratoga victory, George Washington and his army traveled to Valley Forge to camp for a little while. During this time it was winter and very cold.
When they got to Valley Forge they had little food and barely anything to keep them warm. Everyone only got around an ounce of rice to eat and a lot of them had no clothes or blankets to keep them warm.
George Washington's troops were hungry because farmers preferred to sell food only to the British. The British paid them in gold and the congress paid them with paper money so the farmers only wanted to sell to the British.
Then Washington put Baron Friedrich von Steuben in charge of training which helped raise the troop's spirits. Another person that helped a lot was Marquis de Lafayette. He brought the troops blankets and clothes to keep them warm.
By this time the battle of Monmouth has started. After all of this maneuvering, the war ended and the troops were brought back to where they set out from.
Marquis de Lafayette was a French general who played an important role in the Revolutionary War. He also played an important part in Valley Forge and Monmouth when he helped Washington's troops. Lafayette used his own money to provide them with blankets and clothes to help them survive the winter.
