  • What effect does Desiree have on others? In Brit Bennett’s novel, The Vanishing Half, Desiree’s effect on her surroundings can be taken in a negative sense once again due to her bringing her daughter to Mallard, not only would the children of Mallard give her problems in school, but her mother's choice to bring her brought further gossip about her personal life and reason of coming back, “Desiree ignored her, tying pink ribbons around Jude's braids. Bright colors looked vulgar against dark skin, everyone said, but she refused to hide her daughter in drab olive greens or grays. Now, as they paraded past the other children, she felt foolish. Maybe pink was too showy. Maybe she'd already ruined her daughter's chances of fitting in by dressing her up like a department store doll” (Bennett 47). Desiree’s choice to move back to Mallard and even go as far as to enroll her daughter into its elementary school had to be the biggest mistake she could have made while Jude was young. The result left a lasting effect on Jude’s self-image, seeing how she felt lost, and the kids stared at her as though she was out of the ordinary due to what people in Mallard think about Black people; they all believe they are better than anyone that was not with fair skin.

  • What actions does Desiree take?In Brit Bennett’s novel, The Vanishing Half, the actions of Desiree have a huge impact on those in her surroundings seeing as the things she has done regarding her daughter have only stirred up more bad than good, her choice to enroll Jude into the Mallard Elementary School would impact Jude's self-image severely in the future, “She’d spent her summers reading indoors, or when she felt like she was going crazy from being cooped up, she chased shade around the yard, wearing the big choking hat, long sleeves clinging to her sweaty arms. She would get no darker, although she seemed to the longer she lived in Mallard. A black dot in the school pictures, a dark speck on the pews at Sunday Mass, a shadow lingering on the riverbank while the other children swam… A fly in milk, contaminating everything” (Bennett 84). Desiree’s choice of staying in Mallard because she was lost may seem selfish because her daughter, who stuck out like a sore thumb, would only be picked on throughout her entire life in Mallard. Her action to proceed to enroll Jude in school instead of looking toward other courses of action did prove to cause Jude issues with the way she viewed herself and her skin color, especially through her and her grandmother's attempts to bleach her skin and keep her out of the sun.

  • What kind of person is Desiree Vignes? In The Vanishing Half written by Brit Bennett, Desiree proves to be a person who only runs out of fear regarding her abusive situation with her ex-husband she believed that her best coarse of action was to run and go to the only place she knew she had left to go since she had been out of touch with her sister for so long and she had no choice but to revert to the place she originally wished to escape from, Desiree married the darkest man she could find. Now she was back, Lord knows why. Homesick, maybe. Missing her mother after all those years or wanting to flaunt that dark daughter of hers. In Mallard, nobody married dark. Nobody left either, but Desiree had already done that. Marrying a dark man and dragging his blueblack child all over town was one step too far (Bennett 4-5). It is proven that Desiree is the type of character to run when she is truly in a position she feels she cannot get back up from. Desiree sought out help and assistance of any sort due to her hitting rock bottom, she found exactly that because in her place in life she needed to follow through regardless of who would be impacted in the process of going bac to Mallard, concerning her daughter being Black and knowing she would eventually struggle, Desiree is the type o person who tries to see the good within a tough situation because this is the only way she could live safely.
