My reflection:Throughout the reading and presentation, I felt the determination, dedication, and love of Gina's Momthrough all of Gina's, and the families, challenges.
Gina is born on Jan. 3, 2002 Gina's parents find out she is born with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome. This is a rare genetic autosomal recessive gene disorder.
Gina had a lot of love and support at home. Her Dad, two younger sisters, her Mom, Great Grandma and dog.Her Mom was her greatest advocate.
Gina's parents brought her to several places within and out of the US. for:ElectricStimulation for swallowing therapyFeeding TherapyManual Manipulation to the Spine-for blood and oxygenflow to the brainSten Cell Transplant
Gina's Mom wanted others to understand that Gina is a real person with feelings, desires and love.
Gina's Mom fought for Gina to be placed in the proper placement in School.
As a teacher what I would suggest to parents is:Don't give up-you are your child's best advocate.Find all the services your school district can provide that will be appropriate for your child.Find out what Federal Aid you and your child are entitled to. (ex.: Medicaid)Network with other parents in similar positions.Reach out if anyone in your family needs emotional support.Your love and support will help you and your child.
Gina received speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, special education and was fed through a feeding tube. She also had many adaptive equipments.
