As a Caribbean national, I came to Canada with a certain set of values, beliefs etc. denoting my culture, in my pursuit for higher education.

After arriving in Canada, I began to try new things, meet new people and engage with different perspectives, to truly define my unique cultural identity.

Having first hand experience I understand the impact of culture on learning. As a Student affairs professional, I feel it is necessary to engage in Culturally sustaining pedagogy within education, particularly at the post-secondary level, to truly engage adult learners.

This involves, acknowledging and addressing systemic barriers that have been historically places to oppress marginalized communities. Though the road may be turbulent, we must find solace in our discomfort, to properly dismantle these colonial systems.

What about the institutions role?
For a myriad of reasons, they have a global or civic responsibility (in my opinion) to engage in Culturally responsive pedagogy. I believe this pledge, in addition to the efforts of Student affairs practitioners, and educators alike, will bring about more culturally sustainable pedagogy
