The Native American education system was dependent on traditional oral story telling from the elders. They believed spirit, mind, physical body and future happiness was most important. Their three basic courses of education included development of survival skills, cultural heritage, and spiritual awareness (Webb, 2014, p.5)
The European educational principles and practices, as well as their efforts to compel Native Americans to adopt European culture and religion was not a successful (Webb, 2014, p. 8). While European Americans attempted forced assimilation of Native Americans (NA's), most NA's resisted their efforts and sought to preserve their languages and culture (Webb, 2014, p. 185).
To further force assimilation of White culture, Native American children were forced in to boarding schools where disease and death were common. Thomas Jefferson expressed that the American Indian must either learn to swim or drown, be destroyed by Whites. Never did jefferson give thought to the notion that the overwhelming current of White culture was genocidal (Holowchak, n.d., p. 13).
