In this scene, it is revealed that The Fury (Adolf Hitler) and his girlfriend had dinner with Bruno's family a few months prior to their move. This is when his father receives his new job. Although Bruno still is unaware of what his father's job is, the reader can conclude that his father is a Nazi soldier.
Scene 9: Back to Berlin
Bruno and his sister are talking in his room and he accidentally mentions his friend, Shmuel, to his sister. Gretel pesters him about who Shmuel is, but Bruno knows he'd get in trouble if anyone knew he was talking to a stranger on the other side, so Bruno claims Shmuel is his imaginary friend. Gretel makes fun of him and leaves Bruno alone to worry he has exposed his friend.
Scene 10: Bruno Tells Shmuel
Bruno sees Shmuel in his kitchen because Shmuel was tasked to polish glasses. Bruno offers him chicken and Shmuel hesitantly eats it. Right after, a soldier comes and notices that Shmuel has been eating and asks Shmuel if he stole it. Shmuel says Bruno gave it to him, but when asked, Bruno lies and says he's never seen Shmuel before because he was scared to tell the truth.
Scene 11: A Dark and Chaotic Ending
Bruno's parents have a disagreement upon whether or not it's healthy or safe for the children to stay where they currently live. It is never stated clearly, but it is obvious that the family lives next a concentration camp and Bruno's father is the boss of it all. Eventually, the parents come to an agreement that it is not best for the kids to stay there, and they are to move back to Berlin with their mother within the following week. Bruno isn't happy because he doesn't want to leave Shmuel.
Bruno and Shmuel are very upset because they were each other's only friend, and they are sad that they never were able to play together. They decide to have one last adventure and Bruno plans to crawl under the fence and dress in the pajamas that was worn on the other side of the fence. (The reader also finds out that Out-With was Bruno's mispronunciation of Auschwitz.
Bruno and Shmuel play on the other side of the fence. Bruno is about to go back to his house when the soldiers ordered the prisoners to march into a dark small building. Bruno hopes this won't take long because he wants to get back before dinner. Both kids are sad about Bruno moving back to Berlin, and Bruno tells Shmuel that he is his best friend. In the same instant, the doors close and everyone began panicking. To further explain, this building was a gas chamber the two children were locked inside and they are killed along with the rest of the people inside.
