At first, he found the lessonstedious, but slowly, he realized that what he was learning was more than theworkings of the compass. He was learning about the world, about people, aboutthe interconnectedness of trade, politics, and culture. His mind expanded inways that his previous pursuits had never allowed.As monthspassed, Alaric noticed something peculiar. The more knowledge he gained, theless he yearned for gold and jewels. He found satisfaction in understanding, inlearning, in the richness of wisdom that transcended the fleeting allure ofmaterial wealth.
