The French revolution had a significant impact on Saint-Domingue. It was an inspiration for the slaves in St. Domingue to fight for equality especially since The Declaration of rights permitted everyone the right of voting including free men, mulattoes, and people of mixed Africa and European ancestry.

The Haitian Revolution was led by Toussaint L'Ouverture. Toussaint Louverture led a fruitful slave revolt and emancipated the slaves within the French colony of Saint-Domingue (Haiti).
Toussaint L'Ouverture
The slaves gained freedom and equality when they defeated the French, British , and Spanish troops. Toussaint had agreed to end the revolt if the French would abolish slavery. Toussaint became the ruler and made a constitution.
Napoleon
Napoleon made an expedition that was led by his brother-in-law Charles Leclerc. Leclerc arrested Toussaint and deported him back to France.
The Haitian Revolution finished and the last of the French troops took off due to weapons and illness and surrendered to the indigenous army. Toussaint later died in the French prison.
Dessalines officially announced independence on January 1st and made himself ruler for life.
