  • Gina's mother acknowledged Gina as a person with "purpose and meaning" rather than just someone with SLOS, which I liked. Individuals with disabilities require a support structure that empowers them rather than sees them as burdens. It was eye-opening to learn how teachers can discourage parents by continually pointing out what their children can't achieve without offering any ideas. As a future educator, I'm more aware of how I should engage with students' families and aid them in their learning.

  • I didn't agree with the social worker's assessment of Gina's ability to learn in a classroom setting. Individuals are frequently defined wrongly by the numbers on their record/report cards. When assessing eligibility, I believe it is more important and valuable to consider an individual's qualities, goals, and efforts.
  • Teacher Strategies
  • Although I understand why Gina's mother wanted her to take different classes during the day, I'm curious if this contributed to her social skills deteriorating. Wouldn't adjusting to the many classes and individuals be more challenging for her?

  • I will arrange a meeting with parents at the start of the school year, in the middle of the school year, and at the end of the school year to help them share their voices. We will explore the student's individual needs at the first meeting and discover common ground on the strategies that can be employed to meet those needs. The second meeting will be more of a status update in nature. I'll tell parents about their child's progress, what modifications need to be done, and what can be continued in this section. In the third, I'll meet with the parents and talk about how they can have similar conversations with the teacher next year and help their child transition more smoothly.
  • By providing homework assignments/projects that require students to collaborate with their parents and work as a team, hosting multiple parent-facing events that enable teacher-parent collaboration on creating curriculums that go beyond the classroom, and creating a group chat or immersive platform for parents to interact with one another about changes they'd like to see in the classroom and ideas they have, I will further encourage parents to share their voices.
