A theme that is developed in this book is hate has consequences for everyone. This theme is developed through the many forms of hatred that occurs throughout the book. They are mostly hate crimes that are against Maya and her family because they are Muslim.
Theme Development #3
"'My brother lost his leg in Iraq because of you...people'" (18.23).
This is the scene where someone (later identified as Brian) throws a brick through the Aziz family's clinic. The brick had a note on it telling the Aziz family that they were in danger and informing them that the person who threw the brick had their address. This develops the theme because it shows that a hate crime like this has negative effects on both Brian and the Aziz family. For Brian, it is getting in trouble with the police and for the Aziz family it is the physical bruises, but also the constant fear of something like this happening again.
Thematic Solution
This image is the encounter that happens between Maya and Brian at school after the terrorist attack. Brian insults Maya by asking racist questions and making racist comments. The consequences that come after develop the theme. After Maya explains what happened to Dean Anderson, Brian gets suspended as a consequence and although Maya was the victim, she has to deal with the emotional pain that comes with something like this.
This is the scene where Brian confronts Maya and corners her. Brian physically attacks Maya here and nobody is there to stop him until Phil shows up. The theme develops when this hate comes with big consequences for both of them. Brian obviously got in huge trouble when the police found out he was in charge of what happened. Since Brian was physically abusing Maya, she got hurt physically, but on top of that all of her freedom got taken away because of the danger that might arise if she is left alone.
I think this theme will be resolved by Maya and Brian setting an example for bystanders. Since there were bystanders during the hateful interactions that Maya and Brian had, many people saw the negative effects of it. I think seeing the terrible effects of this hate will guide people in the right direction by teaching them that nothing that involves hate ends in a good way and that most of the time it affects more than one person.
