It's Scout's first day of school. "...I would be starting school in a week... Jem condescended to take me to school the first day, a job usually done by one's parents, but Atticus had said Jem would be delighted to me where my room was."
Miss Fisher is introducing herself and finds out that Scout knows how to read. "Miss Caroline printed her name on the blackboard and said, 'This is says I am Miss Caroline Fisher...' ""... as I read the alphabet a faint line appeared between her eyebrows, ... she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste."
When Miss Fisher tells Scout to tell her father to stop teaching her how to read and write, and Scout gets mad because her father didn't teach her how to read. "Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it would interfere with my reading."
It was my first day of school in the US but it was already, the middle of the year.
In math class, we were doing multiplication and I was doing it the way that my parents and old teachers had taught me, the long way.
My teacher came up to me and told me that we were doing the square method, and that we hadn't learned the long way yet and I was supposed to use the square method.
