"Hey Coco, you have Type 1 Diabetes right", asks Rufus. "Yeah I do, why are you asking", Coco responds with worry. "The doctors said I also have it. I don't understand all the things my dad and the doctor talked about. I'm scared everything's going to change! Will you help me please", says Rufus. Coco completely understands why Rufus is scared and she takes it upon herself to help him adjust. She explains all there is to know about the T1D lifestyle!
Your blood sugars should stay between 5-8 throughout the day and 6-10 overnight. It's okay if it goes higher or lower sometimes. We just need to treat them. When my sugar goes low I eat something sweet like juice. When my sugar goes high I exercise like go to the park or give some extra insulin through my pump. Since you're a new T1D you use tiny needles to give insulin.
You have to carb count for all your meals. That means adding up the amount of carbs listed on the nutrition label of the food you eat. My dad tells me the carbs I'm eating for lunch before school. We need to know the carbs in our meals to calculate how muchinsulin we need. It's different for every person though. I take 1 unit of insulin for every 6 grams of carbs I eat. I'll take 3 units of insulin right now because I have 24 grams of carbs in my lunch.
